Military Leader to Visit Moscow
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) _ Military chief of staff Fathi Abu Taleb will visit the Soviet Union this month, state-run Radio Jordan announced Monday.
The radio did not give details of the trip, but Jordan is seeking arms from abroad and has turned to the Soviet Union in the past when unable to obtain what it wanted from the United States or other Western countries that are its usual suppliers.
The U.S. administration is considering arms sales to Jordan, and the kingdom also is negotiating possible deals with Britain and France.
Israel has opposed U.S. arms sales to Jordan.
Earlier this year, Jordan announced it had purchased weapons, reportedly anti-aircraft missiles, from the Soviets. It has also obtained machine guns for its People’s Army militia from the Soviet Union.
