NEW YORK (AP) _ Bryan Marchment's mouth got him in trouble and gave the San Jose Sharks' defenseman an unwanted night off.

Marchment sat out Tuesday night's 1-0 victory over Phoenix under an NHL suspension for an offensive remark directed at a member of the Vancouver Canucks.

During the second period of a 5-2 victory over the Canucks on Saturday in San Jose, Marchment called Donald Brashear, who is black, a ``big monkey.''

``Mr. Marchment has admitted making the remark,'' NHL hockey operations director Colin Campbell said. ``While we accept that there was no inappropriate intent on Mr. Marchment's part, we cannot excuse the conduct.''

Marchment has been quoted as saying he uses ``big monkey'' to describe a bruising, physical player, such as Brashear, who is 6-feet-2 and weighs 225 pounds.
