Former Cuban Leader’s Daughter Charged With Heroin Possession

September 25, 1993

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ A daughter of the Cuban dictator overthrown by Fidel Castro pleaded innocent Friday to heroin possession.

Defense attorney Thomas Gano entered the plea for Marta Cadenas, 36, on a single count of heroin possession. She is a daughter of Fulgencio Batista, who died in Spain in 1973.

Cadenas was arrested at her home on the island of Palm Beach on Aug. 27 after a sheriff’s deputy posing as a Federal Express courier delivered a package containing heroin to her home, police said.

The arrest came after the FBI received an empty United Parcel Service package letter with a note saying the deliveries came at least twice a week with cocaine inside, according to a Palm Beach police report.

Police said they intercepted a UPS package Aug. 5 and after obtaining a search warrant, found heroin inside. After another package was intercepted, the undercover agent made the delivery to her home, police said.

She faces a maximum 15 years in prison if convicted. Telephone calls to Cadenas’ home went unanswered late Friday.
