MIAMI (AP) _ Venezuela’s Jose Barboza pounded out a unanimous decision over Puerto Rico’s Leonardo Mas Saturday night to capture the World Boxing Association Latin American Federation junior-welterweight title.

Going to the body effectively throughout the 12-round bout, Barboza landed the most telling punches in most of the exchanges.

Two judges had Barboza winning 116-112 and the third scored it 115-113, Barboza. There were no knockdowns.

The victory improves Barboza’s record to 29-8-2. For Mas, who was defending his title, it was his second consecutive loss after starting his professional career with 19 consecutive victories.

Mas began the fight throwing effective left jabs and hooks. When keeping his distance from Barboza, Mas outscored his opponent.

But in the third and fourth rounds, Barboza, 30, shortened the pace as his body shots began to wear Mas down. Barboza had Mas on the ropes late in the fourth round with a flurry of punches.

Mas, 23, managed to use his jab strongly again in the fifth, but Barboza resumed his punishing body shots in the following rounds and started connecting with a solid left jab in the eighth.

Mas weighed 138 pounds for the bout, while Barboza met the junior-welterweight limit at 140.
