Turkey cites heat to cancel match in Uzbekistan

August 6, 2013

ISTANBUL (AP) — The Turkish Football Federation says “extreme heat” in Uzbekistan is the reason for canceling an international friendly match scheduled there next week.

The federation says the Aug. 14 game in Tashkent was canceled “after unexpected weather conditions,” and also because the Uzbek federation “couldn’t provide the full requirements” for organizing it.

Temperatures in Tashkent on Tuesday reached about 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) and are forecast to be at least mid-30s Celsius (90-plus Fahrenheit) next week.

Research by FIFA’s medical committee has suggested that players become fatigued after playing for 51 minutes in 30-degree heat.

The Turkish federation says the team will now host Ghana on Aug. 14 in a friendly in Istanbul.
