Meadows OKs $1.9M Deal With Royals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Right-hander Brian Meadows and the Kansas City Royals agreed Thursday to a $1.9 million, one-year contract, more than five times his $360,000 salary last season.
Meadows can earn an additional $150,000 in performance bonuses based on starts, which would bring his income to $2.05 million, the midpoint between the $2.55 million he had asked for in arbitration and the $1.55 million Kansas City had offered.
A hearing had been scheduled for Monday in Phoenix.
Meadows, 25, was 6-2 with a 4.77 ERA in 10 starts and one relief appearance last season with Kansas City, which acquired him from San Diego on July 31 for pitcher Jay Witasick. He was 7-8 with a 5.34 ERA in 22 starts for the Padres.
Meadows was selected by Florida in the third round of the 1994 amateur draft.
