September 27, 2018

Catrina Weigel makes a closing argument during a 2016 trial in Boulder District Court. Weigel is becoming the chief of the sex assault unit at the Boulder County District Attorney's Office.

Chief Trial Deputy Catrina Weigel will be taking over as chief of the sexual assault unit at the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office.

Weigel, who had been serving as the County Court Chief with the DA’s office and has been a prosecutor since 2001, is succeeding Caryn Datz, who left the office to become a judge in the 17th Judicial District .

“Combating sexual abuse is an important issue for our community and one that the Boulder District Attorney’s Office takes seriously,” Weigel said. “I am honored to be part of a group of dedicated deputy DA’s, law enforcement, and professionals who work tirelessly on behalf of the survivors of these horrible crimes.”

Weigel has previously served on the sexual assault unit and was also a prosecutor on the Adam Densmore murder case this year and the Dynel Lane fetal abduction case in 2016.

Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty announced the appointment Thursday, saying he was “grateful to have her taking on this incredibly important position.”

“We are confident that Catrina will provide outstanding leadership and support to the members of the sex assault unit,” Dougherty said in a statement. “She looks forward to establishing a strong working relationship with our community partners.”

As the head of the sexual assault unit, Weigel will serve as a liaison between the DA’s office and law enforcement and help with sex assault training, education and outreach. She will also have her own caseload and supervise the deputies who handle sexual assault cases.

“Our sex assault unit is widely regarded as the best in the state,” Dougherty said. “Catrina is excited to build upon the success of the unit in working with our victims, law enforcement and the community.”
