Florence County fairgrounds open to to shelter pets, deliver livestock relief

FLORENCE, S.C. -- A small animal rescue shelter has been opened at the Florence Fairgrounds at the site of the livestock relief operation.

So far there have been four relief missions that have operated out of the fairgrounds, according to a release issued by the Florence County Emergency Management Division.

A mission to deliver hay and dog food was made to Nichols and hay runs were made to Aynor, Loris and the Florence Humane Society. The hay run to Loris was made aboard South Carolina National Guard helicopters, according to the release.

Four hundred bales of hay and a pallet of dog food have been delivered so far.

In addition to EMD personnel and Guardsmen, Olanta Fire Department is assisting with the livestock relief operations while Red Rover and the Charleston Animal Society representing the ASPCA are operating the small animal shelter.
