Loggerheads Hatch Beside Convention Center Pool
GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) _ Seventy-five sea turtles poked their tiny heads through the sand to complete a drama of nature that played beside a convention center pool for two months.
The loggerhead sea turtles hatched Monday night, said Annette Salvatore, a naturalist at the Gulf State Park.
Park employees scooped the federally protected turtles into buckets and carried them to the water.
The long wait for the hatching began in June when beachgoers noticed a sea turtle had made a nest beside the pool’s outer wall. The area was roped off to prevent harm to the eggs.
Mrs. Salvatore said a security guard at the convention center ″noticed the sand start shifting, and then they started poking their heads out.″
