HANOI, Vietnam (AP) _ Mariano Puerta, Thomas Johansson and Radek Stepanek advanced Wednesday to the second round of the Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City.

Top-seeded Puerta of Argentina held off Japan's Go Soeda 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 at the ATP event, the first international tennis tournament in Vietnam. Second-seeded Johansson of Sweden rallied past Germany's Alexander Popp 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Third-seeded Stepanek of the Czech Republic defeated Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee 7-6 (3), 6-1, winning the second set in 18 minutes. Juan Monaco of Argentina beat Croatia's Sasa Tuksar, 6-3, 7-5, while fourth-seeded Kenneth Carlsen lost to Swede Jonas Bjorkman 3-6, 4-6.

In other first-round matches, Germany's Alexander Waske needed 3 hours to defeat Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands 7-6 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7). Rainer Schuettler of Germany defeated countryman Simon Gruel 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-1, and Czech Republic's Jiri Vanek defeated wild-card Prakash Amritraj of India 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5), 6-4.
