Interstate Reopens After Garbage Truck Wheels Fly Off, Hit Bus

MOSCOW — The wheel of a garbage truck smashed through the windshield of a Greyhound bus Monday morning on Interstate 380 near the borough, injuring just the bus driver. The driver’s injuries were not immediately known. The crash happened at around 9:40 a.m. near exit 22, said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman James May. The interstate fully reopened shortly before noon. The garbage truck was traveling north then crossed over into the southbound side of the interstate. The bus was traveling south. Two of the truck’s wheels flew off. Moscow Deputy Fire Chief John Bauman said the truck’s wheel went through the bus’ windshield and pinned the dashboard onto the driver. Fire crews cut her out. She was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center. Her identity and condition were not known. Additional information was not available. — JOSEPH KOHUT
