Orangemen fall at home to Kearney Catholic
Beatrice couldn’t get much going against the size of Kearney Catholic Friday night at the Ozone in Beatrice.
The Orangemen fell to the Stars 53-41, dropping their record to 2-2 on the season.
Griffen Vater opened the game’s scoring with a basket, but Kearney Catholic came back with three points to take a 3-2 lead.
Andrew Mahoney then scored on a backdoor cut and then scored on again on a fast break layup off a steal from Elliot Jurgens, making it 6-3.
Five straight points by Kearney Catholic and two free throws by Mahoney at the end of the first quarter made it 8-8 after one.
Kearney Catholic scored the first five points of the second quarter to make it 13-8. Mahoney ended the run with a free throw and a take to the hoop by Jurgens made it 13-11.
The Stars came back with back-to-back three pointers to extend their lead to 19-11. A basket by Mahoney and a three pointer by Peyton Murphy got the Orangemen back into it, but Kearney Catholic ended the second quarter scoring with a three pointer, making it 22-16 at the half.
Bennett Crandall opened the second half scoring with a free throw and then answered a Kearney Catholic basket with a basket of his own, making it 24-19. Murphy then got the Orangemen back to within two points with a three pointer.
The Stars scored the next six points to extend the lead back to 30-22. Two free throws by Crandall were answered by a basket from Kearney Catholic.
Mahoney and Murphy each scored a basket to cut the deficit to 32-28. Kearney Catholic extended the lead back to six, but Mahoney finished the third quarter with a basket to make it 34-30.
Kearney Catholic opened the fourth quarter with a basket, but four straight points by Mahoney got Beatrice within two at 36-34.
The Stars scored the next eight points to extend their lead back to 42-34. Beatrice twice got back within six, but never closer as Kearney Catholic would go on to win 53-41.
Andrew Mahoney had over half the team’s scoring with 21 total points. Murphy had nine, Crandall had seven and Vater and Jurgens had two each.
Freshman Brett Mahony led the way for Kearney Catholic with 18 points.
Beatrice falls to 2-2 on the season and will be in action again Saturday when they travel to Omaha Roncalli. The Orangemen will be at home again next Friday when they host Hastings.
