Springfield industrial fire leads to brief evacuations
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield firefighters have battled a stubborn fire overnight at a metal recycling company.
No injuries were reported in the fire but some nearby homes were temporarily evacuated.
Fire officials said the blaze was reported Saturday morning just after midnight at the Joseph Freedman Recycling Co. on Stevens Street. Nearby residents said they were startled by the smoke and flames.
Fire department spokesman Dennis Leger said two large metal trailers containing magnesium shavings were destroyed along with an 18-wheel tractor-trailer parked nearby. No buildings were damaged.
Leger said the hot-burning magnesium was allowed to burn out while firefighters kept the flames from spreading.
Residents were allowed back in their homes about two hours later.
