Vermont AG’s office takes over capital killing case
BARRE, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Attorney General’s office has decided to take over a murder case, replacing a county prosecutor who resigned.
The Times Argus reports Assistant Attorneys General Elizabeth Anderson and Evan Meenan filed a notice last month entering the case to replace former Washington County state’s attorney Scott Williams. Williams, the lead prosecutor, resigned following the 2015 murder of a state social worker.
Jayveon Caballero pleaded not guilty last year to second-degree murder in the 2017 death of 33-year-old Markus Austin. Police say Austin was involved in an altercation with Caballero’s girlfriend outside a bar in Barre before he was shot once in the chest several hours later in Montpelier.
Anderson says she and Meenan will review case files. Anderson isn’t sure when the case will be ready.
