Victim of apparent drowning in Swampscott identified
SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (AP) — The man who died after being pulled from the water off Swampscott has been identified as a local man who coached high school football.
The Essex district attorney’s office on Thursday identified the victim of Wednesday’s apparent drowning as 54-year-old William Ryan.
School officials say he had been an assistant and freshman football coach at Swampscott High School.
A caller reported a man in the water about 5 p.m. Wednesday. The caller told authorities the man went into the water to secure his boat, which had come off its mooring.
The Swampscott Harbormaster located the man, who was unconscious. He was taken to Salem Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The death is not considered suspicious.
