LogistiCare Raises Public Awareness during National Kidney Month

March 19, 2019

ATLANTA, March 19, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In the United States, more than 661,000 people suffer from kidney failure. Of these, 468,000 individuals are on dialysis, and roughly 193,000 live with a functioning kidney transplant. As the nation’s largest non-emergency medical transportation broker, LogistiCare annually provides millions of rides to and from kidney dialysis centers for many of these patients. As part of its March observance of National Kidney Month, the company hopes to be a catalyst for conversation that increases public awareness of the risk factors associated with kidney disease.“About one quarter of the people we transport have late stage kidney disease that requires dialysis,” said Jeff Felton, LogistiCare CEO. “We are honored to provide a critical service to so many in need, but we also have a stake in helping improve the care and outcomes of kidney disease patients. With 4,000 LogistiCare employees nationwide, many of our employees and their families are affected by kidney disease, so, between the impact on members and our staff, it’s personal.”As part of LogistiCare’s commitment to the communities it serves, the company has partnered with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) for the past six years to raise money and awareness through kidney walks and sponsorships. The company is also engaged in various community efforts to educate people about various conditions that cause reduced kidney function. In the past five years, LogistiCare has raised and donated nearly $700,000 to NKF from its corporate office and operations centers across the country through kidney walk fundraisers and sponsorship of the NKF.“Raising funds for the NKF couldn’t be more personal for me,” said Kimberly Vasquez, an administrative assistant in LogistiCare’s Phoenix operations center whose nephew Joey, was diagnosed at age one with Hydronephrosis, a condition that typically occurs in a kidney that swells when urine doesn’t flow properly rom the kidney to the bladder. “He spent most of his childhood in and out of hospitals, but when he was 13, he received a kidney transplant from his mother. NKF was there for him every step of the way. I am extremely proud to work for a company that gives back to those in need.”In addition to kidney walks, the company holds an annual Service Day celebration that includes speeches and testimonials from patients battling kidney disease as well as doctors and representatives from NKF. As part of its service day, members of LogistiCare’s staff pack and deliver gift bags which include blankets, water bottles, pill cases and other useful items to hundreds of dialysis patients. The company’s community service extends beyond its partnership with NKF. LogistiCare is an active participant in goBeyondProfit, an organization that encourages businesses to make significant contributions to improve communities in which they live, work and serve. For more information about LogistiCare’s community involvement, visit www.logisticare.com/community-commitment/.
