Mental health crisis and detox center closes in Reno
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say the abrupt closure of a detox and mental health crisis center has left a void in the Reno community.
The Reno-Gazette Journal reports that WestCare Nevada was one of city’s largest providers of crisis mental health intervention and detoxification care.
Authorities say they learned of the center’s sudden closure on Thursday when an officer tried to drop off a patient.
The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services says the Reno center had been experiencing financial difficulties for months prior to the closure.
With the center closed, Reno Assistant Police Chief Jason Soto says officers will have to transport those taken into custody for severe inebriation to the county jail or emergency rooms, which are already overcrowded.
