Second Baltimore Officer Shot With Own Gun

September 20, 1992

BALTIMORE (AP) _ A deranged man grabbed a policeman’s gun and shot him in the head Saturday, then was shot and killed by officers. The officer was the second in the city to be shot with his own gun in less than 24 hours.

″I feel personally this morning as if this is a dream, but we know this is reality,″ said Police Commissioner Edward V. Woods.

Officer Ira Weiner, 28, was in critical and unstable condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, said Dr. Philip Militello.

The bullet from Weiner’s 9mm service pistol pierced the right side of his head and lodged in his face, making surgery impossible, Militello said.

Police spokesman Sam Ringgold said the man confronted Weiner as the officer walked into a house where a disturbance had been reported. Police were not immediately sure how the man got hold of Weiner’s gun.

The 29-year-old man was shot and killed by officers who arrived to assist Weiner, police said. Other people in the house told police the man had been in a rage, wielding an ice pick and other implements.

Officer James Young was shot in the head Friday while responding to a call at a housing project. He was in critical but stable condition Saturday. Three suspects have been charged with attempted murder.
