PIRAEUS, Greece (AP) _ Greece's national team beat Duke University 89-88 Friday and Yugoslavia defeated Italy 83-82 in the opening round of the three-day Acropolis Cup basketball tournament.

Playing without its star guard, Greek-American Nikos Gallis, Greece led for most of the game, pulling ahead 52-32 with less than two minutes left in the first half.

But Danny Ferry, who had 39 points, led a second-half rally that came up just short.

Panayiotis Yannakis led the Greek squad with 18 points and Nikos Filippou had 17.

Robert Brickey scored 18 and Gregg Koubek added 16 for Duke.

Yugoslavia's Zarko Paspalij scored with 15 seconds to play in the game to give Yugoslavia its victory over Italy. Paspalij led all scorers with 26 points.
