Cougars top Griffins 7-0: Willis tosses no-hitter, Smith’s two HRs, five RBI lifts Norco to TOC title
BULLHEAD CITY — Paige Smith hit two home runs and knocked home five runs and right-hander Sarah Willis tossed a no-hitter to catapult the Norco Cougars to their 7-0 victory against the Los Alamitos Griffins during the final of the 24th annual Dave Kops Tournament of Champions at Mohave High School on Saturday night.
Smith’s two-run home run in the first inning put the Cougars ahead 2-0, and her three-run blast completed the scoring and the game at 7-0 in mercy-rule fashion during the bottom of the fifth inning.
“She hadn’t had a hit in the tournament until today,” said Cougars head coach Rick Robinson about Smith. “She came out of her slump in a real productive way.”
“They’re a powerhouse up and down their lineup. They can put the ball in play and hit the ball hard,” Griffins head coach Rob Weil said. “You know, we can’t make mistakes and leave the ball over the middle of the plate.
“And that’s what we did a couple of times and they took advantage of it.”
Smith added: “I wasn’t hitting that good. I just needed to make adjustments.”
Willis struck out five and walked two in five innings during the mercy-rule shortened softball game.
“She was a little off, but she found a way to throw the big pitch when she needed to,” Robinson said.
Willis said it was easy for her to work her way out of trouble against the Griffins because she has confidence in her teammates.
Griffins right-handed pitcher Tyler Denhart started and took the loss.
