Junior High School Student Caught Shoplifting Commits Suicide
TOKYO (AP) _ A 14-year-old girl jumped from the top of a four-story building in a Tokyo suburb after she was caught stealing comic books, police said today.
The girl, whose name was withheld because of her age, died in a hospital Tuesday of injuries suffered in the jump the previous evening, said Shunsuke Shinohara, spokesman for the Chiba prefectural police.
Shinohara said police believe the girl killed herself in repentance after fleeing from a bookstore owner who caught her shoplifting. He said she jumped from the top of a school in Funabashi city where she was taking English lessons.
Student suicides have become frequent in Japan. Last year 178 girls and 394 boys younger than 20 killed themselves over troubles with school, home, and social life, according to the National Police Agency.
