LOWELL -- Police arrested a 22-year-old Lowell man in connection with several gunshots fired in the Highlands neighborhood at around 2 p.m. Sunday, authorities say.
A .38-caliber handgun was also allegedly seized from Jody Boykins, who was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm on Monday afternoon, according to police.
“We can’t say until it’s tested if it is the same gun that was used yesterday,” said Acting Police Superintendent Jonathan Webb. “But, let’s just say, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
Police responded to the area of Smith and Branch streets shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday for a call involving gunshots in the area.
An investigation determined a 20-year-old man was shot at several times following an altercation with two other men, Lowell police Capt. Paul Laferriere said a few hours after the incident.
No injuries were reported, as the 20-year-old was not struck in the shooting, though two vehicles were, Laferriere said.
Police sought Boykins in connection with the incident, according to Webb. The details of his connection in the shooting were not immediately available.
A traffic stop was made by police after Boykins was seen inside a vehicle Monday afternoon. The gun was discovered on Boykins’ possession at that time, and he was arrested, according to police.
The case remains under investigation. Boykins will be arraigned Tuesday in Lowell District Court.
