Newborn giraffe unable to stand and nurse is hospitalized
NORTH GRAFTON, Mass. (AP) — Veterinarians at Tufts University say they’re treating a newborn giraffe after it struggled to get on its feet and start nursing.
Zoo New England’s Franklin Park Zoo says in a statement that the female giraffe is being fed intravenously and getting antibiotics at Tufts’ Cummings Veterinary Medical Center.
Giraffes typically stand within an hour of birth, but the calf born Sunday night was unable to get upright and nurse from its mother.
Zoo New England’s director of animal health, Eric Baitchman, said Thursday he’s “guardedly optimistic” about the baby giraffe’s prognosis but her caregivers are monitoring her closely.
She was born as part of an effort to maintain a strong population of giraffes in captivity.
