Flash flooding closes roads in Allegheny County, some rescued in Pittsburgh
Multiple roads across Allegheny County closed for a time as a result for flash flooding Thursday evening.
Several cars were reportedly stranded in rising waters, according to the county’s Twitter.
Pittsburgh Public Safety reported that rescue crews had to perform a number of rescues of people stranded in their vehicles.
Among them:2300 block of Idlewood Road, East Carnegie (two vehicles).Banksville Road at Potomac Avenue, Banksville.Rt. 51 at Edgebrook Avenue, Brookline/Carrick.Glass Run Road and Mifflin Road, Hays.Morange Road at Chartiers Avenue. A person was rescued from a floating vehicle.
Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich reminded motorists to never drive through standing water. “Even a couple feet of rushing water can move and carry a car.”
Allegheny County started reporting road closures just before 5:30 p.m. and added more later.

Crews also battled a house fire in the 100 block of State Street in Wilmerding, Allegheny County 911 said.
Initial reports indicated it may have been caused by a lightning strike, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
A flash flood warning was in effect for parts of Allegheny, Westmoreland and Washington counties until 6:45 p.m.
The National Weather Service in Moon said just before 5:15 p.m. that radar indicated heavy rain of up to 1 inch was expected to fall.
