Girls basketball: Summer Creek, Atascocita advance to area round

February 12, 2019

CROSBY - Summer Creek head coach Carlesa Dixon has stressed the importance of fast starts this season.

The practice paid off for the No. 19 Lady Bulldogs.

Summer Creek began their playoff journey against Deer Park in a Class 6A bi-district playoff game at the Cougar gym in Crosby. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Deer 45-39 to advance to the area round.

“Starting off we did great,” Dixon said. “The first half I was very pleased with the way we started off because that is something that we have emphasized.”

Summer Creek (29-7) will face the winner of the bi-district game between Alief Elsik and Alvin with a date, time and place that will be announced at a late date.

Deer Park ends the season 15-16.

Summer Creek started off the game with a 7-0 run furnished with three points from senior guard Halle Jones and four points by Adaora Nwokeji.

“Usually it’s the other way around for us,” Dixon said. “We usually start out slow and comeback fighting in the third and fourth quarter. It kind of switched up on us today. We have to be able to put it together for all four quarters.

Summer Creek outscored the Lady Deer 14-6 in the second quarter to give the Lady Bulldogs a 26-10 lead at halftime.

The Lady Deer’s offense started off the third quarter on fire with a 6-0 run to cut Summer Creek’s lead to nine. All six points came from Enriqua Bellow, and she finished the game with seven points.

However, the Lady Bulldogs’ press defense caused problems for the Lady Deer and created several turnovers.

Summer Creek answered and finished the third quarter on a 11-7 run to take a 36-21 lead after the third quarter. Jones scored nine for Summer Creek while Brook Love led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points.

Dixon liked the way her squad answered adversity in the game.

“At this stage you can’t panic,” Dixon said. “You have to be cool under pressure. I think they were very composed, but I wanted more from them.”

Now, Summer Creek will look to make improvements as they prepare for their next opponent in the area round of the playoffs. The Lady Bulldogs are making their ninth straight appearance in the playoffs.

“We have to get better defensively,” Dixon said. “Every day we can get better on defense, and we just have to continue working and not stop.”

Atascocita routs La Porte to advance to area round

No. 18 Atascocita started the playoffs by sending a statement.

The Lady Eagles defeated La Porte 71-18 in a Class 6A bi-district playoff game.

Atascocita will take on Clear Falls, who defeated Alief Taylor 50-47 on Monday night, in the area round of the playoffs.

A day, time and location will be announced at a later date for the area round matchup.
