Armed fighters attack Mali ex-president’s home
BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Armed fighters have attacked the private residence of former Malian president Alpha Oumar Konare.
In a statement from the Malian presidency late Saturday, authorities said one assailant was killed when security forces exchanged fire with the attackers.
The presidency condemned the attack as barbaric and said police would launch an investigation. It was not immediately clear whether the home had been targeted because of Konare.
Konare served as head of state in Mali from 1992 to 2002.
The West African country was plunged into chaos in March 2012 when a coup overthrew the democratically elected head of state who succeeded Konare.
The coup leader later handed over power to a transitional government, and a civilian president was elected during last year’s vote.
