PHOENIX (AP) _ The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Robert Ellis and shortstop Tony Womack on the 15-day disabled list Monday and recalled left-hander Nick Bierbrodt and infielder Alex Cintron from Triple-A Tucson.
Bierbrodt (2-1), Arizona’s top pick in the 1996 amateur draft, started Monday’s series opener against the San Diego Padres. His previous major league appearance was June 26, when he gave up four home runs and six runs in a 10-7 loss to Houston.
Bierbrodt had a 9.00 ERA during his four-start run in June. In his second start, he threw 49 pitches in the first inning, but got out of it without allowing the Cubs to score and wound up a 13-3 winner.
Right-hander Mike Morgan also was activated from the disabled list by Arizona, which designated right-hander Mike Mohler for assignment. Morgan missed 87 games after aggravating a spring training injury _ a strained right arch _ on April 14 during his only start of the season.
An MRI exam Monday revealed Womack tore his right calf muscle running to first base Saturday at San Francisco.
Womack is hitting .234, with 12 doubles, four triples, one homer and 18 RBIs.
