Sporting beats Porto 1-0 to stay in 2nd place

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Sporting Lisbon beat FC Porto 1-0 at home on Sunday to strengthen its hold on second place in the Portuguese league.

Sporting closed to within four points of leader Benfica before it visits Nacional on Monday. Porto was left in third place, five points adrift of Sporting.

Striker Islam Slimani headed home Andre Martin’s pass for the 52nd-minute winner.

Porto midfielder Fernando was dismissed with a red card in the 90th.

Also, Setubal won 3-1 at Belenenses, while Arouca beat visiting Olhanense 2-0. Their losses left Belenenses and Olhanense at the bottom of the table.
