Eaves leads Detroit Tigers in hits during 7-6 win over Atlanta Braves

March 5, 2019

His chances of sticking with the Detroit Tigers when they break camp may not be strong, but Kody Eaves had one splendid spring training game recently.

The former Pasadena Memorial High School baseball player led Detroit in hits during a 7-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Eaves, a spring training invitee, went 2-for-3 at the plate, the only Tigers player that day to collect more than one hit on a day when the team finished with 10 hits.

Detroit erupted for five runs in the first inning and Eaves had a hand in that uprising.

The 2012 Memorial High School graduate and Second Team all-district player clouted a double, one of two extra bases hit by the Tigers lineup in the first frame.

The two-bagger came off Atlanta pitcher Touki Toussaint, who absorbed the eventual defeat. Toussaint made his major league debut last August, going 2-1 on the mound and making five starts for the National League East Division champions. He finished with a 4.03 ERA.

Eaves overall is 2-for-11 at the plate over six spring training games with two starts at third base. Defensively, he’s been credited with two putouts, one assist and no errors so far over 26 innings of action.

In all likelihood, Eaves will start the season with Detroit’s triple A club. Last season, he bounced between Detroit’s Double A and Triple A clubs.
