New prompt care medical facility opens on Richland Avenue
University Health Care System celebrated the official opening of its new prompt care facility on Richland Avenue on Thursday afternoon.
The new facility will serve residents of the surrounding area, including Beech Island and Jackson. It is the newest of 12 such primary and prompt care facilities opened by University Health Care System, one of which is located on Silver Bluff Road.
“What we really felt was, we needed to take care closer to people’s homes,” said President and CEO of University Health Care System James Davis during the event. “It’s hard to do, and it’s expensive to do; but we really felt we needed to reach out and get to all the different communities around us.”
Aiken Mayor Rick Osbon and Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce President and CEO J. David Jameson spoke at the event. There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and tours were offered.
Primary and prompt care facilities are becoming increasingly popular due to their ease of access for people who have difficulty scheduling appointments with busy doctors or do not have much free time.
“As patient’s health care is changing, as wants and needs change, it is very important for health care to adapt and change to those needs,” said Dr. Bozeman Sherwood, with University Health Care System’s prompt and primary care facilities.
Primary and prompt care facilities also make it easy for people suffering from things like sprains, colds, and aches and pains to receive the medical care they require in a timely fashion.
“What you see is not just a doc-in-the-box,” Sherwood said of the Richland Avenue facility. “This is a complete, full-service health care facility. We have a team here, a team approach to medicine, a team approach to patient care.”
The facility takes advantage of a variety of online resources. At universityhealth.org, patients can use a system called MyChart that allows them to communicate with their physicians through email, request medication refills and view test results.
The website also allows patients to reserve an appointment online and check wait times so they can spend the time leading up to appointments at home rather than in the waiting room.
University Prompt Care’s new location is located at 3515 Richland Ave. W. in Aiken.
