Wildfires Shorten Yankee Workout
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ The New York Yankees cut short their workout 45 minutes and went inside for conditioning drills Monday because of smoke from wildfires.
The fires have burned over 10,000 acres, approximately 40 miles east of the team’s spring training complex, causing the closure of a segment of Interstate-4 near Lakeland. A wind shift blew smoke and haze from the fire into the Tampa area.
``I’m out on the beach,″ Yankees manager Joe Torre said. ``Last night, I came out of the house and you could smell it out there.
``When you’re out here running and taking deep breaths, it can’t be good for you. Hopefully,it’s cleared up by tomorrow, and we’ll get back to normal.″
The Yankees’ completed their scheduled bullpen sessions and batting practice.
