USBL’s Sea Dragons Hire Rick Barry
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ Hall of Famer Rick Barry was hired as the first coach of Florida Sea Dragons, a USBL franchise that operated in recent seasons as the Tampa Bay Windjammers.
Barry, a 12-time NBA All-Star who won a league title while playing with the Golden State Warriors, spent the last two years as coach of the USBL’s New Jersey Shorecats. He also formerly coached the Fort Wayne Fury of the CBA.
``Rick brings a real enthusiasm to the team,″ Sea Dragons president Brett Vickers said today. ``He also brings a great knowledge of the NBA and how to teach and develop players to go on to play in the NBA. And that’s what this league is all about.″
The other candidates for the job were Orlando Magic assistant Eric Musselman and former NBA players World B Free, Frank Berkowski and Truck Robinson.
The Sea Dragons will begin play next April in the 7,000-seat TECO Arena in nearby Estero. Vickers said the team already has sold about 700 season tickets, and Barry’s hiring is expected to generate more interest.
