Walter Cronkite on ‘Murphy Brown’? That’s The Way It Could Be
NEW YORK (AP) _ Long a leading man at CBS News, Walter Cronkite may soon take a supporting role on a CBS sitcom about a TV newsroom.
As first reported today in The New York Daily News, Cronkite has been offered a recurring part in ″Murphy Brown,″ the popular comedy series starring Candice Bergen as the star reporter on a TV newsmagazine.
Is that the way it is?
A Cronkite spokeswoman, Suzanne Gottlieb, confirmed that the show’s producers have invited the veteran newscaster to come aboard, but added that no formal offer has been made. She had no information on whether the proposed role would call for Cronkite to play himself or a fictional character.
She said further discussion was likely when Cronkite returns from Europe in a few weeks.
In 1989, Cronkite made a onetime appearance on ″Murphy Brown,″ and in 1974, he appeared as himself on an episode of ″The Mary Tyler Moore Show,″ also set in a TV newsroom.
