Man Killed Pursuing Escaped Pet Cockatoo

April 15, 1994

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) _ A man chasing his pet cockatoo plunged over a 40-foot cliff to his death.

Anthony W. Piper, 31, of Hermiston, had spent much of Thursday chasing his escaped pet, and was trying to reach the bird with a net when he apparently lost his footing and fell, striking his head on a rock, Umatilla County sheriff’s Deputy Tom Waterland said.

Piper was on one side of the Umatilla River while his girlfriend searched the other. She was using binoculars and saw Piper fall, authorities said.

The bird was not recovered. Cockatoos are a variety of crested parrots native to Australia and the East Indies.
