COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) _ Iowa took advantage of four hits and an error to score all three runs in the fourth inning and defeat Big Ten rival Michigan 3-2 Saturday in an elimination game at the NCAA softball World Series.
Tasha Reents started the rally by reaching on an error by Michigan third baseman Tracy Carr, stealing second and scoring on a double by Tammy Utley.
Lyn Nance singled before pinch-hitter Melissa Young’s RBI single to center scored Utley. Lea Twigg singled home Sarah Hoel, who had pinch-run for Nance, and the Hawkeyes took a 3-0 lead.
Sara Griffin led off the sixth with a double to center for Michigan (51-14) and scored on Jessica Lang’s single.
Cathy Davie led off the Michigan seventh with a walk. Iowa’s Deborah Bilbao booted Cheryl Pearcy’s sacrifice bunt, leaving runners at first and second. Reliever Leticia Castellon allowed only an RBI single to Griffin, before shutting down the Wolverines.
Iowa was to face California later Saturday night. The winner of that game was to play Arizona on Sunday.
