Berwick Sweeps Valley West In First Round Of Playoffs

The five-seed Berwick Bulldogs opened the District 1/2/11 Class 2A boys volleyball subregional playoffs with a sweep at home. The Bulldogs rode Santiago Segura’s 35 assists, as well as Zach Evans’ 20 kills and 11 digs, to a 3-0 win against No. 12 Valley West.

Misael Hernandez totaled 24 service points and six digs for Berwick. Luis Francis spiked six kills, while Ryan Kishbaugh recorded seven digs and two aces.

Berwick advances to play No. 4 Tunkhannock on Wednesday at Holy Redeemer.

Dock Mennonite 3, Crestwood 0

The ninth-seeded Crestwood Comets were swept on the road by No. 8 Dock Mennonite in the first round of the District 1/2/11 Class 2A boys volleyball subregional playoffs.

Adam Williams led Crestwood, recording 10 assists with four service points. Connor Novatnak added four service points and three kills, while Zy’aere Gridine had five blocks and three kills.

Dock Mennonite advances to play at No. 1 Holy Redeemer 5 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Berwick-Tunkhannock will follow.

Western Wayne 3, Hazleton Area 2

Chris Wolk led home Hazleton Area with 10 digs, nine kills and nine blocks in a regular-season home loss for the Cougars.

Hazleton Area’s Kevin Blanco tallied nine kills. Alec Plesh notched 21 assists, nine service points and four digs. Cristian Posada added nine digs, four kills and two aces.
