Watch out for mycotoxins on your grain
NORFOLK - Mycotoxins, naturally occurring mold fungi that affects grain can fatally harm some species of livestock.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is encouraging you to be mindful of mycotoxin levels in grain you feed this winter.
Director Steve Wellman says this years grain in Nebraska is high quality with low mycotoxin levels, but it’s still important to remain vigilant.
“We do have some other neighboring states with some issues so I think the point here is to make our livestock growers aware that the potential is out there for issues. If you have any questions about the mycotoxin levels have them tested and be aware of what might cause issues.”
Wellman says different species of livestock will react differently if they have consumed grain with mycotoxin on it. Some are highly susceptible, while others have little to no effect to it.
