ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ Oakland Athletics pitcher Mark Mulder will likely miss the remainder of the regular season after herniating a disc in his lower back while working out.

Mulder, who is 9-10 with a 5.44 ERA in 27 starts, was injured Wednesday and did not accompany the team for the start of an 11-game road trip Friday night at Tampa Bay.

Oakland head trainer Larry Davis said Mulder might be ready to pitch if the Athletics make the playoffs.

``You're very careful with this,'' Davis said.

Mulder will be re-evaluated Monday.
