‘Buy Malaysian’ Campaign Launched

October 22, 1997

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) _ The Malaysian government said Wednesday it will launch a nationwide ``Buy Malaysian″ campaign to help curb the nation’s trade deficit.

In the budget presented to parliament last week, Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia should reduce imports to help narrow the deficit.

During the campaign, the messages _ buy Malaysian products, spend less and save more _ will be carried on billboards and leaflets, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister S. Subramaniam.

The Treasury expects the current account deficit to grow to 13.1 billion ringgit, or $3.8 billion, this year from 12.3 billion ringgit.

The widening trade deficit has caused the ringgit to slide against the dollar.
