OEIRAS, Portugal (AP) _ Top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero downed Felix Mantilla 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3 on Sunday to win the Estoril Open, his second ATP title this year.
The two Spaniards matched each other in strength and spirit over more than three hours with long rallies the rule.
Ferrero, 20, won the Dubai Open last month and was ranked 19th coming into the tournament.
In the women’s final, Spain’s Angeles Montolio rallied to beat Russia’s Elena Bovina 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and win her first WTA title since turning professional in 1990.
Bovina, a towering 18-year-old, appeared stronger than Montolio, but missed a lot of returns at the net and lost too many points on unforced erros. In the end, the 25-year-old Montolio won her way with cool and patience throughout the match that lasted exactly two hours.
It was the first final for Bovina.
