Comment deadline extended for Souris River management study
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The public is being given more time to comment on a study of Souris River management options.
The International Souris River Study Board has moved the deadline to Nov. 12 due to a prolonged harvest season that has kept many farmers in the field.
The study is aimed at finding the best ways to manage the river and its reservoirs on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.
Water science engineers are setting up various management models. Public responses will help the experts better understand the impacts and benefits to communities in different parts of the basin.
A June 2011 river flood caused by heavy spring snowmelt and rains damaged or destroyed thousands of homes and other structures in Minot and caused an estimated $1 million in damage in the region.
