Deer Park football ringing in new season with festival Saturday night

August 17, 2018

It’ a new chapter in Deer Park High School’s proud football program this fall and to recognize that, the program will be holding a “football festival” Saturday night.

The event will take place from 6-9 p.m. in and around Clyde Abshier Stadium.

New head coach Austin Flynn, a 2002 Deer Park High School graduate, would enjoy seeing a large turnout for the festival.

“We’d love to see everyone from the community come out and enjoy themselves as they prepare for the upcoming season,” said Flynn, who played collegiately at Iowa State University.

Not only will it be a chance for residents to meet their new head coach, but a good chunk of Flynn’s staff will be new. Among the new faces who will be prowling the sidelines will be Ben Barkema, the team’s offensive coordinator and who was a teammate of Flynn’s at Iowa State.

Also new to the staff will be a pair of former South Houston High School coaches in Brian Williams and Justin Garney. It was just four months ago that Garney was trying to beat Deer Park’s baseball team because Garney was South Houston’s varsity head baseball coach.

But Garney is also a Deer Park graduate. Flynn also spent a brief time as a South Houston High assistant football coach.

While barbecue will be on the food menu, Flynn said there will be bounce houses and a football skills area for the young and young at heart.

If that doesn’t get someone in the football spirit, also making an appearance at the Football Festival will be the band and cheerleaders.

After Saturday, the next 11 weekends and hopefully more will be a football festival of a different kind - the actual season. And it starts next Saturday with a scrimmage game vs Summer Creek on the road. Game time is 11 a.m.
