Anatoly Alexandrov Wins WBO Title
PARIS (AP) _ Anatoly Alexandrov of Russia won the vacant WBO super-featherweight title Saturday night, outpointing Julien Lorcy of France.
Alexandrov, 31, won the split decision, despite blood pouring from a wound over his left eye throughout the late rounds of the 12-round fight.
The Russian fought confidently throughout, often content to drop his guard as he pounded Lorcy with a succession of heavy blows to the head and body.
In the 10th round, Alexandrov nearly knocked down Lorcy with a blow to the chin, then cut him under the right eye.
Lorcy briefly looked in control in the final seconds of the sixth round when a right hook cut Alexandrov above the left eye. Blood continued to trouble the Russian in the seventh, and the cut opened again in the ninth, but the Russian continued to land the stronger punches.
Alexandrov, born in Kazakhstan, improved to 33-3.
Both fighters weighed 129 pounds.
