CAIRO, Egypt (AP) _ A moderate earthquake occurred near Cairo on Monday, the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said. No injuries or damage were immediately reported.
The chief of the institute, Ali Abdel-Adim Tialib, said the epicenter of the magnitude-4.4 quake was in Dahshur, 22 miles south of Cairo.
Dahshur was hit by a 4.9 tremor on June 12. It is home to a number of pyramids, temples and tombs of ancient Egyptians.
The tremor occurred at 6:25 a.m., Tialib said.
Quakes measuring 5 or more can cause considerable damage.
