RONAN, Mont. (AP) _ An 11-year-old girl driving her mother's car, apparently with permission, lost control of the vehicle and crashed, killing a 9-year-old girl who was a passenger, authorities said Sunday.

The passenger was thrown from the car when it crashed Saturday night, Montana Highway Patrolman Tim Wyckoff said.

Three girls were in the car, which overturned twice and came to rest on its top. The driver and a 13-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital and released with minor injuries.

Wyckoff said the driver told him she lost control of the car when she reached down to pick up something on the floor. The car was traveling about 45 mph and went down an embankment.

None of the girls wore a seat belt.
