Feds convict RI man for trafficking fentanyl

NEW HAVEN-A Rhode Island man caught with 338 grams of fentanyl with his child in the rear seat pleaded Monday in federal court here.

Juan “Money” Hazard, 42, of Cranston, R.I. entered a guilty plea to possession with the intent to possess fentanyl during proceedings before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah A. L. Merriam.

He now faces a mandatory five years in prison and a maximum of 40 years when he is sentenced Dec. 10 by U.S. District Juge Alvin W. Thompson. He has been detained without bond since being arrested on May 4.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Stolfi Collins said Hazard was to meet an individual in Ledyard to sell the drugs On April 26, 2017. Investigators found a wooden box containing three shrink wrapped packages containing 338 grams of fentanyl, a highly hallucinogenic drug often mixed in marijuana and heroin.
