Undated (AP) _ Basket Weave got up in the final strides and edged front-running River Demon by a head in the $36,000 Exceller Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at Belmont Park Thursday.
The favorite of the crowd of 13,299, Basket Weave carried 114 pounds, including jockey Jerry Bailey over the six furlongs in 1:10 2-5 on the fast track and paid $7.20, $4 and $2.60. He earned $21,600 for Greentree Stable.
River Demon, 112 with Gregg McCarron, was 11/2 lengths ahead of Alev, 115 and Jorge Velasquez.
River Demon paid $4.20 and $2.80, and Alev was $2.80 to show.
Warm Season took the lead entering the stretch and ran off to a 41/2 -length victory over Dandy Danny in the $9,500 Oh Say Purse at Bowie Race Course.
The 3-year-old colt was timed in 1:17 2-5 for 61/2 furlongs with jockey Greg Hutton. The winner paid $15.80, $4.20 and $4.20 for his third victory in five starts.
Dandy Danny, favorite in the six-horse field, finished four lengths before Head Cut. Dandy Danny returned $3.40 and $2.80, and Head Cut was worth $4.20 to show. ---
Now It's Gone romped to an easy win in the featured $8,000 fifth race at Rockingham Park.
Taking the lead after a quarter-mile under Victor Gell, the 4-year-old filly won by 31/2 lengths over Carra Baba.
Now It's Gone was clocked in 1:13 2-5 and paid $3.80, $3 and $3. Carra Baba returned $4.60 and $3, and Ca C'est Bon was $3.80 to show.
On The Brink swept by the leaders in the turn for an easy six-length win over Jungle Surprise in the $15,560 Sally Ship purse at Churchill Downs.
The 3-year-old filly covered the 1 1-6 miles in 1:45 4-5 and returned $4.20, $3.20 and $2.40.
Jungle Surprise paid $13.40 and $5.20 while That Pretty Girl finished a nose back and paid $3. ---
Wil Bid, ridden by Danny Weiler, won the featured eighth race at Thistledown, running the six furlongs in 1:11 4-5. The winner paid $4.20, $3.20 and $2.80.
Scholars Thorn rallied from just off the pace to finish second, one-half length in front of a fast-closing Cosque for show money.
