Former Chief Justice Dies
MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ Bruce F. Beilfuss, former chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, died Friday at his home following an illness. He was 71.
Beilfuss served on the court from 1963 until 1983, the last seven years as the court’s 20th chief justice.
Beilfuss was a driving force in the 1970s in the creation of a state Circuit Court of Appeals, said Justice Roland Day.
″He and (former Gov. Patrick) Lucey traversed the state, promoting the appeals court,″ Day said. ″Bruce saw the need to reform our court system and promoted it.″
A native of Withee, Beilfuss received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1936.
