Fatal crash closes I-84 in New York
Interstate 84 eastbound will be shut down for most of the afternoon as police investigate a fatal car accident near Exit 17.
Police confirmed that at least one person has died as a result of the accident. While details of the crash are still forthcoming, police said one passenger car and a tractor trailer truck collided around 4:30 a.m. on the highway near Kent, NY.
Authorities said they had received a call about a vehicle in distress shortly before the accident, but whether the two are related was still under investigation. Crews with the nearby fire department had to extricate at least one person as a result of the crash.
Police said the eastbound lanes of the highway will be closed until at least 1 p.m. from Exit 16 through to Exit 18. Passenger cars are being diverted onto the Taconic State Parkway, which doesn’t allow commercial vehicles. All commercial vehicles are being diverted at Exit 17.
The identity of the person who was killed and whether there were additional injuries was not immediately available.
