AGAWAM, Mass. (AP) — Fire officials are trying to determine the cause of a blaze that displaced more than 20 residents at an apartment building in Agawam.

The Springfield Republican reports (http://bit.ly/142QJxt ) that the fire started around 3:30 p.m. Sunday in a second-floor unit at the Shibley Court Apartments. Firefighters extinguished the initial blaze but fire reached the attic.

Fire Department Lt. Jim Deming says firefighters had to cut holes in the roof and remove ceilings to extinguish smoldering insulation in the attic. One apartment was completely destroyed by fire and several sustained extensive water damage.

No residents were injured. One firefighter suffered minor neck strain but remained on the job.

A spokeswoman for the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross says residents are staying with family and friends.
